Food Truck Rally, Prospect Park: 5/27/2012

May 31, 12 Food Truck Rally, Prospect Park: 5/27/2012

I got my StreetGrub on at the Food Truck Rally on Sunday, May 27th, 2012 at Grand Army Plaza in Prospect Park!  Met lots of awesome locals, a couple from Brazil, a family from Paramus, and some would-be Brooklynites scouting out the hood, seeing if they really should, and from what I could see- all looked good!  It was a great turnout today, with a brief 5.4 minute rain that did nothing to ward off the crowds of hungry StreetGrubbers!

I spoke with some food truck owners and was told the turnout was surprisingly good – given the forecast of all day showers, and that people were simply away for the Memorial Day weekend.  Yes foodtruckers – we are die hard StreetGrubbers and won’t let the 80% chance of torrential TOM’s-destroying downpours turn us away.  Big D himself of Big D’s Grub Truck (I knew because of his “Big D” tattoo) told me the turnout is usually better though, so you bet yours truly will be back for the next rally on June 17th!  Word on the street is that Big D sells ridiculously yummy ginger chicken tacos and bulgogi, so I’ve made it one of my GrubSpots for June.  Check out my review then!

So I can’t help that my tooth is sweeter than a sugar-dusted-caramel-drenched Dulce de Leche doughnut from the Doughnut Plant (I totally made that up, but they should make it), and while not on my agenda, I just had to sample something from the Cupcake Crew It wasn’t the bright neon lettering of their truck that reeled me in like a honeybee to said doughnut, but rather, the smell of salty, fatty, crispy (yes I can smell crispy stuff!) bacon that tickled my Grubdar.  I ordered the large Maple Bacon without as much a glance at the minnies.

I was so super excited, but being the responsible blogger, I one handed the heavy plate and turned on my camera for a quick picture with my right.  Right before I dropped it on the floor.  And right before I heard that shutter-click from my Lumix.  My face turned red as I contemplated rationalizing the outdated and silly 5-second rule, but before I came to my (un)senses, Franky behind the counter hands me another.  I immediately took a shot of the cupcake before devouring it in 2.5 bites.  In that short moment of merriment, I was good enough to taste the moist fluffiness of the cake and buttery frosting, but yet it wasn’t fighting the bacon for the spotlight.  I’m not sure how it worked so well, but I also made sure to lick all the maply-syrupy awesomeness that was kind enough to grace my fingers.  I may have eaten some of the paper too, trying to extract every last bit of cake but boy did it hit the spot.  Franky didn’t need to give me the freebie – I would have given him my wallet for it.

I didn’t get to grub on as much as I would have liked, but being that June 1st is less than a week away, I wanted to save the sampling for then.  However, I left Grand Army Plaza today satiated, not only from what I ate, but because of the good people I met, that were all (not one said no!) kind enough to share their day with me and my camera.  They became my de facto StreetGrub mentors, enticing my ears with details of all their favorite street places to grub; so look for new additions to my NOM Map very soon!  Today was definitely a great day, so to all my fellow StreetGrubbers, thank you and stay tuned.  Enjoy the pics!

Found you on midtownlunch.com and I’m glad I did. Never knew about the rally and I’m only a few stops away! Will definitely go to the next one for a picnic with hubby. Thanks Steve!

Thanks Diedre! I may actually bring a towel/blanket for a picnic myself – actually I might even bring a tent and just stay the whole day! See you there.

Wonderful first post Steve!! Making me hungry already… I’m going to try to make the next food truck rally as well! We must divide and conquer next time. LOL. Get all the lines covered! I wish you much success and here’s a suggestion you might be interested in…. street food in Chinatown. (Tripe, curry squid, fish balls, scallion pancakes, tea eggs and ofcourse the lil mini cake stuff… haha) Can’t wait for your next post! *hug*

Thanks Shelly! I think a divide and conquer is definitely in order lol. I am both excited and terrified of street food in Chinatown. Ordinary things like tripe & squid worry me, so I think I’ll head down there when I get some more plates under my belt. Hope to see you on the 17th and thanks for the kind words!

Wonderful pictures Steve! I planned on going but saw rain all day as well. I’m so bummed about it! I’ll go to the next one for sure, maybe see you there.

Thanks! it was super humid though, but I’m glad it didn’t rain. I will definitely be at the June 17th rally, so say hi if you see me!

@ Eve- so the reply button is gone for me too. I think it has to do with my theme, so I’ll fix it tomorrow. MSE was cool, but I was going to shake shack that day so I didn’t eat anything there. What other trucks have you tried? Post up your recommendations in my NOMination page and I’ll check them out!!

    • Haha I shall conjure a list some other time. MSE will be there till June 1. Go there before it’s gone xD Be sure to try Stuffed Artisan Cannolis

Thanks for the headsup! I’ll be sure to drop by this week. Looking forward to reading your NOMinations!

  5. Hey Nate ~ nice meeting you the other day. I was the one in the group of 5 sitting on the grass with my philly cheese steak :)

    • * LOL idk why I typed in Nate (comment above). Sorry Steve, suffered a slip there.

      • StreetGrubSteve /

LOL no prob! Thanks for your comment Eve and for letting me intrude on your lunch! I remember the cheesesteak, and wish I’d taken a better shot. It looked awesome! Did you get it from Mike n Willies?

        • I actually got it from Phil’s Steaks (w/ onions and provolone). I wish I only ordered the half though, I was too stuffed to get anything else afterwards. Did you actually eat anything?

          • StreetGrubSteve /

Yes- I tried holding out since a lot of the trucks were on my list, but I had a cupcake and a grilled cheese from Gorilla Cheese.

          • Hmmm there’s no reply button to your comment.

How was the grilled cheese? I avoided it since it looked toooo cheesy/rich.

          • StreetGrubSteve /

I’ll look into the reply button fix. For my recap-take a look above! I wrote briefly about the grilled cheese, but all in all- I wasn’t too impressed. The cheese was lukewarm and wasn’t melted. I think some of your friends had grilled cheeses from Eat right?

          • Reply issue has been corrected.

She said the grilled cheese was good and not as rich as she expected. I did read the post, but I wanted a comment-y opinion haha. Gouda cheese is my favorite; shame it wasn’t entirely melted. I lol’d when you mentioned you dropped your cupcake. I gotta try that maple bacon goodness.

          • StreetGrubSteve /

LOL- got you. I’d never had Gouda and thought it might just not have been a meltfriendly cheese, but then why put it on the menu! I think you’ll love the maple bacon cupcake- and I wish I’d taken a shot of when it fell but was so upset at myself (and embarrassed) that I picked it right up and dumped it. Franky saw me and handed me the freebie then. I also tried the key lime pie mini after and it was super moist!

          • Key lime pie?! Gahhhh I should’ve saved room for that. I’ll go hunt down that truck now.

I wonder if we could eventually reduce this comment space to one word per line.

          • StreetGrubSteve /

haha, I’ve been trying to figure out the settings, but to no avail!

          • I need to go back to Madison Sq. Eats. I haven’t had the chance to try ALL the trucks yet.

There goes the reply button again. You’ve dun goofed up.

Good to meet you today Steve you’re a cool dude. I told you about the taco truck open late and found the name, El Diablo Tacos. They get pretty crowded when the bars close. Hope you much success in your challenge and I’ll be back to check on your progress.

    • StreetGrubSteve /

Hi Nate- I remember you, thanks for the comment! El Diablo is definitely on my NOM Map, and has been mentioned a lot! Also sounds like I’ll most likely be the only sober grubber there if I happen to visit late (which sounds fun!). Thanks again for your contribution!

  7. Carolyn /

Hi Steve! Met you on the Eat truck line today- neat blog! You should definitely go back again since there are usually more trucks but everybody thought it was raining for sure today. Good luck next week & hope to see you again :)

    • StreetGrubSteve /

Hi Carolyn. It was sooo humid today, but because it didn’t rain, I think the turnout was pretty good. I’m definitely going back again and thanks for the comment! I’ll be uploading pics by tomorrow night so check back then!
