NY vs. Boston Food Truck Throwdown, 10/13: and the Winners are…

Oct 14, 12 NY vs. Boston Food Truck Throwdown, 10/13: and the Winners are…

The inaugural Food Truck Throwdown in Boston’s Dewey Square brought about a line-waiting festival of the highest order, with average wait times in the 30 minute mark.  But that didn’t stop the 20,000+ crowd of hungry grubbers from getting their NOM on.  The all-star roster of trucks (7 from each city) engaged in a delicious day long Battle Royale for their chance at reining in one of 9 categories.  The Jetblue-sponsored event guaranteed not only a shiny award and bragging rights, but also round-trip tickets to anywhere Jetblue flies.  Steve Leibowitz of HubFoodTrucks.com and I were enlisted with the daunting task of picking the winner for Best Crew, but we prevailed – and without further adieu, I present all 9 winners of the first ever Food Truck Throwdown.

Boston’s own Roxy’s Grilled Cheese picked up BEST TRUCK DESIGN and Bon Me’s delicious Vietnamese Sandwiches earned them BEST ASIAN.  The BEST SAVORY ITEM went to Staff Meal – who rolled out fearlessly with plates of Pig’s Head taco.  The honors for BEST SANDWICH went to Lobstah Love Truck for their buttery fresh Maine Lobster Rolls.  I got to sample their Lobster mac & cheese and it was absolutely divine – organic shells smothered in buttery white cheddar, sprinkled with creamy bisque and a heap of succulent lobster.

Both cities fought hard, but ultimately NY came out on top for a narrow 5-4 victory.  Fishing Shrimp reeled in BEST (shrimp) TACO, and Nuchas topped Boston’s favorites with their feisty Jambalaya empanada for BEST SEAFOOD.  The MVP of the event – Wafels & Dinges knocked it out of the ballpark, bringing home 3 awards – BEST SWEET ITEM, BEST VEGETARIAN, and of course, BEST CREW.

All 14 trucks – Bon Me, Kickass Cupcakes, Lobsta Love, Mei Mei Street Kitchen, Roxy’s Grilled Cheese, Staff Meal, The Cookie MonstahBian Dang Taiwanese Lunchbox, Big D’s Grubtruck, Fishing Shrimp, Mike ‘n’ Willies, The Munchie Mobile, Nuchas, and Wafels & Dinges certainly brought their A-games, but the biggest winners were the event-goers, showing both NY and Boston food trucks nothing but love and support.  By day’s end, Beantown trumped the Big Apple to secure the People’s Choice Award for best Food Truck City.  Together, with Jetblue and the city of Boston, Sara and the entire crew at Food Truck Throwdown organized this to a tee, and made the inaugural event a tough act to follow.   But word on the street is that DC and Philly both have something to say about all this- so the stage is most definitely set for future Throwdown events.  Stay tuned for my thoughts on all the food I’d sampled and for more delicious pictures!
