Day 25: Hibachi Heaven.
I’d never been to a Hibachi restaurant before, but have seen the acrobatic showmanship on TV of Hibachi chefs, so I was excited about visiting Hibachi Heaven. Met by Mike and Nick at the window, I asked for my usual and received a hefty combo box of beef & shrimp with a medley of veggies over fried rice. Covered in a bright green wasabi-infused mayo, the box of colors was a feast to my eyes. My first bite was of the shrimp. I grabbed a piece laden with the mayo and it was just delicious. Creamy with just a hint of horseradish, it paired well with the humongous shrimp. However, my second bite of the beef didn’t fare quite as well. It was a tad over-cooked, and although wasn’t chewy, could have benefited nicely from spending less time on the grill.
It’s easy to overcook shrimp so I was a bit surprised to have found the shrimp so well-cooked compared to the beef. The pieces of meat without the sauce though were under-seasoned, but when eaten with the fried rice worked well. The medley of veggies included cabbage, carrots, onions, broccoli and mushroom and ironically, I felt the rice and veggies had the most flavor – garlicky, and deliciously savory. Overall, the wasabi-infused mayo was excellent, so if I got more of it, it would have provided seasoning for the rest of the protein. The surprise for me was definitely that the veggies and rice could have sufficed for a delicious meal all on their own. Overall, it was tasty, and although not perfect, the fix was simple, less time on the grill with the beef, and a bit more sauce – and you’d have a hefty lunch that actually feels healthy and light.
