Day 19: Halal-a-thon dinner.

Jun 23, 12 Day 19: Halal-a-thon dinner.

My burger lunch scored high in the taste department, but low on the equally important texture scale, so I went on an impromptu Halal-a-thon for dinner.  Having worked late on the UES, I was tired, and simply not up for a walk over to 6th for a visit to the infamous yellow-shirt donning Halal guys.  I was also hungry, so I walked to the first Halal cart on the block and ordered a combo over rice.  Knowing this wouldn’t cover my appetite, I found another Halal cart some 5 blocks away and placed a second identical order – combo over rice with extra white and hot sauce.  The first order from 53rd and 3rd was just plain bad.

The meat was bone-dry and overcooked, and the rice, although fluffy, was the yellow Mexican kind, so it didn’t pair well with the flavors of the chicken and white sauce.  The hot sauce also tasted of vinegar, like Tabasco, so the entire box was just a no-go.  The second order from Ali Baba on 60th in front of Bloomy’s smelled the same, but was worlds better.  The meat was tender and the mix of peppers and onions gave it a nice flavorful kick.  The hot sauce was also proper, spicy without the vinegar, and the white sauce was creamy.  Sadly, the rice was the same short grain Mexican kind, but the flavor of the meat and sauce more than made up for it.  Overall, today was a bit of a flop.  The Go Burger was delicious, but tiny, and my Halal-a-thon dinner just felt incomplete.
