Day 12: Kwik Snack @ Kwik Meal Cuisine
I spotted another cart during lunch @ Chinese Mirch, and for a midday pick me up, decided to drop by for a kwik snack. I asked Nasir and Mohamed at Kwik Meal Cuisine for my usual and got a Kati Roll stuffed with chicken, white sauce, and veggies. The chicken was mostly dark meat so it was tender with notes of coriander, paprika, and most probably cumin. It had that unmistakable halal chicken smell and taste that I’ve grown to love. The veggie mix included your basic lettuce, tomato and red onion with pieces of jalapeno. The white sauce was thicker, with a sour cream base, and creamier than tzatziki.
Now onto the good part. Yes, the chicken was very moist and flavorful, and that green hot sauce (I asked for extra) had a substantial kick to it, but the wrapper was clearly the star of the show. It was well-crisped, buttery, and so intensely flaky I could eat a dozen of them alone. The insides were soft and chewy, and tasted like Chinese scallion pancakes – but not the typical frozen ones served in fast food joints, I’m talking fresh and made from scratch that are sold in Shanghai-style restaurants. The flavor was mild, and a bit wheaty, which gave it a nice earthy note, like a pita. Nasir told me it was a Malaysian pita, so I’ll be on the lookout for a Malaysian food truck. There is no doubt I’ll be back for another round of Kati rolls!
Crossing the street, I noticed someone walking away from a fruitcart sipping on what looked like a milkshake so of course I raced on over anticipating dessert. I asked Pam what she’d just sold and was told it was a protein shake. I’m an avid lifter, hitting the weights 2-3 times a week, and since I’d strayed away from my normal diet of mostly chicken and eggs, I was beginning to find difficulty in intaking an adequate amount of protein from only food trucks. I’d always ignored these little fruitcarts assuming they sold only fruit salads, but I may have struck gold twice today! First with the awesome malaysian style kati, and now with a healthy protein-infused fruit shake. Pam took my order of the usual and I received a smoothie of banana, pineapple, mango, strawberry, and blueberry fortified with a shot of protein powder. It was great, and tasted like a normal delicious fruit smoothie. I now know where to go to get that little extra boost in protein on work out days! Thanks Pam!
